Changes for the new season

For those of you who were unable to attend the Club’s AGM in May I am précising below the main changes that take effect from the start of the new season.

New club night hours – having reviewed the court usage on club nights and the increased cost per hour we have reduced Monday club nights from 3 hours to 2½ hours. Club nights will therefore finish at 10pm

New fees – due to the rising costs we have had no choice but to increase costs for the first time in three years. Annual subscriptions for seniors will rise to £90 (£80) and for juniors to £45 (£40). Visitor fees will rise to £5 (£3) for seniors and £2 (£1) for juniors. Match fees will also rise to £5 (£4) for seniors and £2 (£1) for juniors. We have been fortunate in being able to keep the increases to a modest level.

Committee – the committee for the coming season is:

Chairperson – Daphne Snook

Secretary – Sheila Moore

Treasurer and District Representative – Nigel Coombs

Fixture Secretary – Claire Struthers-Semple

Events Co-Ordinator – Julia Eatwell

General Committee – Craig Beamson, Paul hardy, Robin Elliott and Richard Cooper.

Teams – the teams that we have entered will be playing in the following divisions:

Ladies A – Division 1; Ladies B – Division 1.

Men’s A – Division 1; Men’s B – Division 2; Men’s C – Division 3.

Blackford Cup v Hurst Monday 8 October

Result: Newbury (-5) 373 points Hurst (+7) 354

Team: Angela Gearing, Julia Eatwell, Suzy Mugford, Dan Woolley, Nigel Coombs, Pedro Cosa

The first round of the Blackford Cup got underway at Trinity School last night with Newbury entertaining Hurst in the first leg of their tie. Newbury started slowly trying to get to grips with the handicap and it wasn’t until the sixteenth end that the scores were only one point apart. The home side won 14 of the 20 ends but due to the handicap and slow start were only 19 points ahead at the end of the evening. Most of the success was in the ladies and mixed doubles and it was only the singles and mens doubles that dropped games.

The second leg takes place on Thursday at Hursts temporary home at Theale Green Community School. This may reduce the “home advantage” but with the handicap and potential team changes who knows?

Newbury Mens C vs Bucklebury B 1 October 2012

Result: 7-2 win

Team: Richard Cooper, Shri Bhat, Craig Beamson, Nick Steele, Paul Hardy, Bill Jones

Newbury Mens C drew on the spirit of the European Ryder Cup team to come back from a slow start to win 7-2 over Bucklebury B. Everyone contributed with at least two wins, but the honour of “men of the match” this week goes to Paul Hardy and Bill Jones (a.k.a. Poulter and Rose) for their unbeaten evening including being the only pair to beat Buckleburys number one pair, doing so 20-22, 21-19, 21-15.
